Types of Deep Tissue Massage
Therapeutic, deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point release- what does it all mean?
Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage that helps relieve pain and tension. Generally we focus on a specific problem—such as a tight low back or neck. And then, we use either deep tissue, myofascial or trigger point release techniques to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body. With deep tissue massage, we can go with the muscle fibres and other times we use a type of cross friction.
Myofascial release applies moderate, prolonged pressure to tight muscles, usually with very little or no oil. We generally sustain this pressure for 2-4 minutes over the spot of tension.
Trigger Point techniques apply pressure to the contracted knots in muscle tissue. These are the points that are usually quite tender and can refer pain away from the point of tension.
All these techniques are very effective at reducing muscle tension, which will allow you get “back at it!” And our therapists will apply the right amount of pressure to address your needs, and always work with your personal pain tolerance.
