Nichole’s 100 mile race journey:
Back At It’s Athlete Ambassador Nichole Abma writes about her 100 mile races and her recovery from ankle ligaments injury:
Last year I successfully ran my first 100 mile race. The build up of running that 100 mile race was huge for me because my first attempt resulted in me completely tearing my ATFL & CFL ligaments and getting my first DNF. I was not able to run for weeks and had to learn how to properly train and recover. This did not come easy for me. My strength training had to be completely adjusted to make up for the loss of my missing ligaments. I had to take recovery more seriously to prevent further injury and alter my training plan. I consistently went to Back At It for treatments during this period of training and then this past September I was able to successfully accomplish my goal in running my first 100 mile race and podium next to two other incredible athletes. A week later I was back on the trails feeling great. Back At It has played an enormous role in my recovery over the years. Going in for regular treatments has allowed me to bounce back quicker, but has also allowed me to push myself knowing I will get the TLC my body deserves. I have another 100 mile race at the end of June and 100 km race in September and I am so grateful that I even got to sign up for them. I can not say this enough, but recovery is essential to prevent injury. I love prioritizing my recovery now because I see how positive the benefits are and the outcome of my 100 mile race speaks to that.
