New Treatments With Katherine

Katherine’s NEW Treatments:
Katherine began her massage therapy career right here in Canmore in 2017. She promised herself that after an undergraduate degree, post-grad thesis and massage therapy school that she was done with schooling. But deep down she knew from the beginning that she wanted to be an osteopath. The osteopathic philosophy just felt right: comprehensive and compellingly wise.
In 2022, Katherine enrolled in osteopathy school in Vancouver. She now travels there monthly for intensive hands-on training while applying her learning here at the clinic.
Katherine is evolving her practice to reflect the osteopathic principles she’s learning — including visceral, fascial, and cranial work that gently supports the body’s own ability to restore and regulate itself.
TMJ:
My postgraduate coursework has changed my TMJ treatments in a few ways. While I release the muscles in the neck and jaw with traditional massage therapy, the mobility of the TMJ is related to many other structures that I am able to treat, like the neck, the cranial bones, the ligaments of the TMJ and the esophagus. This is a great treatment for folks who clench or grind their teeth, have pain in the jaw, have problems opening or closing the jaw or to support recovery following dental surgery.
Visceral treatment: What is viscera? Viscera means organs!
Our organs are held in place by ligaments that are anchored on our skeleton. When these ligaments become restricted, like from surgical scars, inflammation or trauma, that tension pulls on other organs and also the bones that they attach to. This means that back pain and SI joint pain can result from restriction in the ligaments of the organs. It also means that the function of the organ can be affected. In visceral treatment, treating the organs means releasing the fascia around the organs, just like we would anywhere else in the body. Remember, your organs are just as much a part of you as your arms and legs are, and they need to have mobility too! In a visceral and craniosacral massage therapy session, I can:
Treat the fascia in the digestive system to offer support for things like constipation, indigestion and acid reflux
Treat the fascia around the ribs, lungs and diaphragm to support asthma and recovery from respiratory illness
Treat the fascia in the lower abdomen to offer support for painful menstruation
