Why am I sore after my massage?
It is not our goal as massage therapists to make you sore after your massage, however it sometimes does happen.
Here are some reasons why:
- Has it been a while since your last massage? Sometime leaving long periods of time between massages can cause soreness just like when you haven’t exercised and then you go back to the gym
- Did you have an injury? By breaking up scar tissue and adhesions in the muscle is can cause soreness.
- Your muscles have essentially been manipulated, stretched, and worked on for an hour (or longer) so they may feel tender.
Here are some helpful tips to prevent getting sore:
1. Epsom Salt Baths
Epsom Salt Baths are a massage therapists favorite thing to recommend after a massage!
Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate, magnesium is the 2nd most abundant element in the human cell. Epsom Salt is most commonly used in hot baths to relax sore muscles and draw toxins from the body. The body absorbs the salt, which acts like a sedative for the nervous system, reduces swelling and muscle soreness.
So after your massage take a bath and pour 1 to 2 cups of Epsom Salt in. It is cheap and is found at any grocery store in the pharmacy section.
If you are pregnant or have a history of heart disease, please consult your physician prior to soaking in an Epsom salt bath.
2. Drink Water
Massages can leave you dehydrated because massages works on moving blood and lymphatic fluids from the muscles.
