Cupping is a technique that has been around for thousands of years and has been used by many different cultures around the world. A silicon cup is placed on the skin whereby the underlying tissues are drawn up. This negative pressure creates a decompression or drawing action in the tissues rather than the compression of traditional massage techniques and results in a highly effective separation of tissue layers. This allows blood and fluids to be brought just below the surface of the skin, increasing the blood flow to the area to encourage healing. As well, cupping is a form of myofascial release because it can help to loosen adhesions and tension in the muscles and fascia. It is also an excellent way to stimulate the lymphatic system to help clear toxins that are released during massage.
During a treatment, oil is generally applied to the skin and the silicone cups are suctioned on to the body and are moved around to break up any adhesions. It is a unique sensation and most people find it is an effective addition to regular massage techniques.
