Congrats to all the Athletes
I just wanted to congratulate all the athletes who just came back from the Olympics. For achieving their life long goal of making it to the Olympics. To be able to compete in your own country with the crowds cheering you on must have been something else.
Here’s a quote by Frank Beck “It’s a paradox (speaking of how we often are nervous before the performance of something we actually enjoy). You’re nervous before doing something you enjoy, and the performance becomes a consequence. If we think about everything, every little detail we’re supposed to do up til the moment, it becomes tiring and destructive. Can’t one rather think about the fact that one is lucky to be able to perform, doing something one loves to do? That you are a lucky person who is privileged to have the opportunity to do so? Everyone will hear about how well you did, instead a lot of people are more focused on what people will say if they fail.”
The reason I chose this quote is because one of the athletes was telling me it was hard coming home from the Olympics and having people disappointed that you didn’t medal. That people expect you to be on the podium and forget that you have already achieved your life time goal.
Be proud of your performance and know how hard you worked to get to where you did. Congrats!
Good luck to all of the athletes that are currently competing in the Vancouver Paralympics. Especially Brian McKeever and Colette Bourgonje.
I have to say working on Colette has been the most amazing experience. She is by far one of the most inspiring and amazing people I have ever met. Colette Bourgonje is currently competing in cross country in Vancouver. She has participated in all five Paralympic Winter Games as well as wheel-chair racing in three Summer Games, and has achieved eight medals.
Update: Colette Bourgonje is the first-ever Canadian to win a Paralympic medal on home snow. She won silver in the women’s 10-kilometre sit-ski race at Whistler Paralympic Park on Sunday March 14th. March 18th Colette did it again, she won bronze in the 5km.
